White Mountain "Precious Days": Reality vs. The Picture in My Mind

"Precious Days," White Mountain, 1000 pieces, 24 x 30 inches

I love this puzzle; I swear that I do. And this is how it still looks in my mind when I think about it.

But a harsh bit of reality struck me a few minutes ago when I snapped this "in progress picture."  Suddenly, I realized that the last 225 or so pieces are going to take a bit longer to place than I thought  when I sat down to the puzzle board two hours ago. But it's going to happen sooner or later, I guarantee you that.

With approximately 225 pieces of sky and sparsely-leaved trees to go

  1. LOL! I feel your pain having really struggled with the sky on that ships puzzle. All that rough grass at the bottom looks quite tricky too. In fact that is quite a challenging puzzle but a nice scene, if I'd seen it in a charity shop I think I would've bought it.

    1. You're right about all that grass at the bottom. With the exception of the lighter patches of grass, that whole section had to pretty much be constructed based on the shape of the pieces and the direction of the blades of grass. But all of a sudden (don't you love when that happens?), it all started falling into place.

I've made a little more progress with the trees since I posted, and now I'm down to something like 160 pieces, so it's going to happen in the next day or two depending on how much spare time I have.

The irony of this one is that I got it free from White Mountain to replace a puzzle of theirs that I bought with a missing piece. I did request this one when I saw it in their catalog, though, because it's exactly the kind of place I always dreamed of retiring to...and we're still stuck in the city two years into retirement.

  2. I completely understand, I think most puzzlers do. I just went through the same thing with the trees in my Butterfly Kingdom puzzle. In the end though, it was beautiful - and totally worth it. :) It's a beautiful image and you'll be done in no time.

    1. I think I said somewhere that "every puzzle has a section or two of drudge work" or something like that, and that its the "drudge work" that is the true challenge of any given puzzle. I think that's true, and as long as a puzzle is not 75% drudgery, I will give them a shot. This one has large sections that require a bit of patience, but in the end, it will have been well worth the effort. I may just have to tape this one up and consider eventually framing it...gotta find some wall space in this room first, though.
